India govt to hold talks on Gorkhaland issue

Ilam, Oct 1: The Central Government of India has called a tripartite meeting in a bid to strike a deal on the unrelenting issue of Gorkhaland, northern hilly region of West Bengal.



The meeting is set to be held on October 23 in New Delhi. [break]



The representatives from Gorkha Janamukti Morcha, State of West Bengal and the central government will participate in the meeting.



Joint Secretary at Ministry of Home Affairs of the Central Government of India Suresh Kumar had called up the leaders of the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha on Monday urging them to take part at the meeting to be held after 23 days, a source said.



People of Darjeeling have been demanding for a Gorkhaland state since 107 years.



The Indian government has taken initiative in holding talks with the agitating parties after the nation witnessed the increasing tension in the region in the last seven years.
