BUTWAL: The Lumbini Zonal Hospital in Rupandehi is facing an acute shortage of snake anti-venom. As a result, the hospital has been compelled to refer snake-bite patients to other medical centers in Bharatpur and Kathmandu.

According to medical superintendent at the hospital Krishna Khanal, they have run out of snake anti-venom since the beginning of this year´s monsoon. “We have run out of stock and we have been referring snake-bite patients to other hospitals,” said Khanal. [break]

Chief of the emergency ward Dr Kasinath Banjade said he himself referred some snake-bite patients to Bharatpur over the last few weeks. “Snake-bite patients should be treated immediately. Delay in treatment may even lead to death of patients,” said Banjade. He said they had asked for 4,485 vials of snake anti-venom but to no avail.
