Home ministry issues SSP Shrestha's suspension letter

KATHMANDU, Oct 31: The home ministry on Wednesday wrote to the Nepal Police headquarters, with an instruction to suspend senior superintendent of police (SSP) Rabi Raj Shrestha  for  three months in connection with the October 5 foreign currency haul at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).



Shankar Prasad Koirala, spokesperson for the home ministry, informed that the ministry issued the directive as per the report of the probe committee earlier formed to investigate the police officer´s possible involvement in the currency smuggling. Koirala also said necessary actions will be taken in the future after further investigation. A day earlier, the police headquarters wrote a letter to the home ministry recommending action against Shrestha.



Earlier, a three-member high level probe panel headed by AIG Bhisma Prasai had submitted its report to IGP Kuber Singh Rana suspecting Shrestha´s involvement in the case. He was then transferred to the police´s Reserve Pool.



Police had arrested Indian national Binod Kumar Soni with nine different foreign currencies totaling Rs 12.4 million on board a Fly Dubai plane at TIA.



The illegal currencies were seized when a man, Milan KC, called the duty officer of TIA claiming that Fly Dubai Aircraft had a bomb which was followed by a police check of the aircraft.
