A meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Somlal Subedi at the Prime Minister's Office on Monday directed the Home Ministry and the Ministry of Finance to make necessary preparations for distributing the relief amounts to the quake victims from next week.
Uttar Kumar Khatri, spokesperson at the PMO, said that Chief Secretary Subedi has directed the Finance Ministry to release the necessary budget to the Home Ministry by the next two days.
"Once the budget is released, the Home Ministry will forward it to the local bodies for distribution. If everything goes as planned, the local authorities will start distributing the amounts to the victims from next week," he said, adding, the Home Ministry has proposed a budget of Rs 600 million for the winter relief distribution.
He said the PMO has also directed the Home Ministry to submit district-wise details about the earthquake victims to both the PMO and the Finance Ministry on Tuesday.
A cabinet meeting on November 25 decided to provide Rs 10,000 each to the earthquake-affected families so that they can keep warm in winter.
Similarly, the meeting has also directed the Ministry of Urban Development to expedite efforts to construct 50 collective accommodations to temporarily shelter the displaced families in the 14 districts severely affected by the April earthquake.
According to a report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), some 95,100 people remain displaced by the earthquake and they have been taking refuge in various temporary shelters due to the delay on the part of the government in starting reconstruction work in the affected districts.
