KATHMANDU, Oct 20: Goat traders in Kathmandu have raised price of live goat by Rs 20 per kg from Saturday citing short supply.

With the price hike, local goats now cost Rs 350 per kg, up from Rs 330 per kg as on Friday, while Indian goats are being sold for Rs 360 per kg, up from Rs 340 per kg. The price of sheep, however, has not changed and is selling at Rs 400 per kg. [break]

"The price of goat has gone up in the local market because not enough goats are imported to meet the demand in the market," said Deepak Thapa, a former president of Livestock Traders´ Association. He also attributed hike in the price to the demand that shot through the roof since Friday as buyers thronged the market in the last-hour rush to buy goats.

The demand for goats traditionally goes up during Dashain festival.

"We were planning to sell bout 15,000 goats every day between Saptami (the seventh day of the Dashain festival) and Dashami (the 10th day)," Thapa said.

"But if the supply does not improve, the prices can go further up."
