FSFN on verge of split

BIRGUNJ, Feb 3: At a time when Madhes-based parties are talking about forming broader alliances, Upendra Yadav-led Federal Socialist Front Nepal (FSFN), one of the constituent of the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), is on the brink of split.

A group within the party has warned of deserting it after the word “proportional” was omitted from the statute of FSFN. Rijan Ansari has formed a group to wage a struggle to force the party to include the word.

“The word proportional representation was removed from Article 41 (3) of the party statue. We had demanded the party to reconsider it,” said Ansari.

“However, the leadership turned a deaf ear to our demand. The chairman was not even interested to talk about the issue. It lead to the formation of the new group,” he added.

Ansari said the group will expand its support base to the district-level if its demand is not addressed within two weeks.

Following the Madhes movement in 2007, FSFN was formed after a split in the CPN-UML. Since then, FSFN has already split six times, giving rise to six different parties. With the formation of a new disgruntled group within FSFN, there is now a strong possibility that the party would be split for the seventh time.

Meanwhile, Lal Babu Raut Gaddi, a lawmaker and vice-chairman of the party, said the newly formed group would be expelled from the party. “The party will expel anyone who goes against its principle and discipline. A decision on the matter will be taken very soon,” he added.
