Speaking at a program in the capital on Friday, he said donors may hesitate to provide funds for reconstruction as the country is in a transitional phase and has weak governance.
So, the government should form a high-powered international coordination committee to take them into confidence and recognize them as a strategic partner for reconstruction, he said.The Nobel Prize laureate, who is in Nepal on a two-day visit, informed that during his visit with Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, he asked the latter to form an international committee with the authority to carry out and oversee reconstruction works.
He said representatives of donor governments in the international coordination committee can help plan reconstruction policies, raise funds, mobilize resources and oversee reconstruction works carried out by the committee led by the PM. "In this way, the government can raise long-term funds and ensure transparency in reconstruction works," said he.
Satyarthi's remarks come at a time when the government is all set to carry out international donors' conference to raise fund for reconstruction on June 25. Satyarthi, who is leaving the country for Norway on Monday, said he will seek European Union's support to raise funds for reconstruction works in Nepal. On Sunday, he also called on President Ram Baran Yadav, National Planning Commission vice-chairman Dr Govinda Raj Pokharel and Chief Secretary Leela Mani Poudel.
"It was so encouraging that students were excited to come back to their schools even as school structures were badly damaged by the earthquakes," said he.
He said the government should give first priority to rebuilding school infrastructures as hindrance on school operation may increase drop-out rates in remote areas. He also urged the government to beef up its border security as child trafficking is likely to increase in the aftermath of the earthquake.
