KATHMANDU, Jan 7: Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) on Thursday nabbed a Mini Tata that was ferrying smuggled Chinese goods from Tatopani, using manipulated customs declaration forms (CDFs) and customs receipts (of duty payment) of the past.[break]

The Mini Tata was transporting 4,800 pieces of pants, which belonged to a trader, Gajendra Lal Bohra.

Preliminary investigation has found Bohra had written over the past CDFs (numbered 12650 and 12750) and used past customs receipts to dodge the revenue check points on the way.

The manipulated CDFs belonged to Navabudhha Business Trek (P) Ltd and New Bhagawati Business (P) Ltd. The CDFs further mention that a pant costs $2.10.

“We cross-checked the CDFs and found that those parties had actually brought toilet papers and a television through it earlier this week,” Mahesh Dahal, director general of DRI, told Republica.

The DRI investigation estimates the smuggled goods to be worth Rs 2.2 million at the existing market rate and the volume of tax evasion could stand at around Rs 731,000.

The department has already taken Bohra into custody and initiated actions against him as per the existing Customs Act.

Going by the Customs Act, DRI can seize both the smuggled goods as well as vehicle used to ferry them.

“We will also slap fine against them and scrap operating license of both Navabudhha Business Trek P Ltd and New Bhagawati Business P Ltd,” said Dahal.
