Taking to media persons upon arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport on Saturday after taking part in the fifth Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction that concluded in Jakarta Indonesia last Thursday, the Deputy Prime Minister pledged to make maximum efforts on his behalf for the allocation of five percent budget for mitigating disaster risks in the country.
Kathmandu is one of the 21 earthquake-prone zones in the world and budget must to be allocated for reducing the possible risks of disaster, stressed the Deputy Prime Minister.
According to him, Nepal apprised the Conference of the efforts being made at the local and national level to reduce the disaster risk, challenges and problems being faced by the country to that end and raised the issues related to the development of organizational mechanism to minimize problems related to landslides, floods and global climate change, among others.
The Conference reviewed the progress of the 10-Year Hyogo Framework of Action Plan and discussed about the future strategy for reducing the disaster risk. A high-level roundtable meeting was also held on the sidelines of the Conference.
Besides, during the Conference, an agreement has been reached to formulate projects from the central to local level for mitigating disaster risk, allocate the necessary budget to implement the projects and monitor the implementation status.
The Conference stressed the need of collaboration with the non-government organizations, private sector, civil society and donor agencies for the effective disaster management.
Around 1400 representatives from over 50 Asian countries , the United Nations, south east Asian organizations and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation took part in the Conference.
