KATHMANDU, Feb 25: A meeting of leaders loyal to Nepali Congress (NC) senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba faction has decided to oppose a proposal of the party's establishment side to increase the number of party office bearers.

A gathering of second rung and youth leaders of the Deuba faction held at a party venue at mid-Baneshwar on Tuesday decided to oppose the proposal to increase the number of office bearers and expand the central committee."As we have already concluded district conventions and only a week is left for the party general convention, we don't have time to discuss increasing the number of office bearers," said NC youth leader Udaya Samser Rana. "Our meeting concluded that party statute should not be changed to serve the interest of any leader."

However the Deuba faction has said that party statute can be revised only to form a provincial body in the party. "Since our party's general convention is being held after the promulgation of the new constitution, we must form a party body to oversee the provinces," Rana.

The participants of the gathering also opined that the party policy and program was proposed unanimously by the party establishment side. Leader Bal Krishna Khand threatened to bring a separate policy and program if the establishment side pushes the draft without their consent.

"The policy and programs should have been discussed prior to the village-level conventions of the party, but it has been provided to the central leaders just before the general convention," leader Rana quoted leaders saying in the gathering.

Meanwhile, another aspirant for the party presidency, Ram Chandra Paudel, has also intensified meetings in his attempt to become unanimous candidate from the party establishment faction. Leaders loyal to Paudel have also been holding separate meetings in the capital for the past few days.

Meanwhile, three scions of Koirala family also held separate meeting on Wednesday to finalize their candidacies and position. Leader Shekher Koirala had taken initiatives to pursue aspirants within the Koirala family. He discussed the issue with Sashank Koirala and Sujata Koirala in separate meetings on Wednesday. "There is no dispute within the Koirala family over candidacy; we will unitedly face the upcoming party election. We are for ending factionalism and uniting the party," Said Sashank.
