KATHMANDU, March 15: The vote counting of the 13th General Convention of Nepali Congress concluded on Monday after eight days of vote counting that for all the 64 posts.

Following the elections, the party's election committee on Monday announced 25 central working committee (CWC) members under the open category and 14 members under the provincial category.


The committee had earlier announced the results of new party president, general secretary and treasurer at first and then it had earlier this week announced the results of 22 CWC members under various reservation quotas such as woman, indigenous communities, Madhesi, Dalit and Muslim.

Known faces who lost in CWC

Former speaker Taranath Ranabhat, former ministers Govinda Raj Joshi, Chirinjibi Kumar Wagle, Purna Kumar Sherma and Laxman Ghimire lost in the open category.

Youth leaders and lawmakers Ram Hari Khatiwada, Ranjeet Karna, Uday Shamsher Rana and Mahalaxmi Upadhyaya lost their election for CWC. Similarly other lawmakers Manmohan Bhattarai, Padma Narayan Chaudhari and Rajan KC also lost the fray for CWC member. Former MPs Binay Dhowj Chand, Shovakar Parajuli, Jeep Tsiring Lama and Surya Man Gurung also lost the election.

Former vice chairman of National Planning Commission Dr Govinda Prasad Pokharel, former chairman of the Nepal Bar Association Prem Bahadur Khadka and former president of Federation of Nepali Journalists Taranath Dahal also failed to get elected as NC central committee members.

15 old faces lose CWC position

As the general convention concluded on Monday evening, 35 leaders who were in the previous CWC have now lost their position.

Among them, 19 were elected directly from the previous general convention in 2010 and two others were nominated later by the then president.

Of those 21 leaders, six fought for top positions such as party president, general secretary and treasurer, while other 15 lost their race for CWC position.

Senior leaders who were defeated in party office bearers' positions are likely to be nominated to the party central committee later.

Two former CWC members - President Sher Bahadur Deuba and General Secretary Shashank Koirala - have now been elevated to top posts in the party. Newly-elected party Treasurer Sita Devi Yadav is completely a new face in the party CWC.

Thirteen other new faces have made it to the CWC position.

Ramesh Lekhak, Bishwa Prakash Sharma, Chinkaji Shrestha, Kalyan Gurung, Bahadur Sing Lama, Mohan Basnet, Bir Bahadur Balayer, Hridayaram Thani, Dila Sangraula, Sarita Prasai, Laxmi Pariyar, Kiran Yadav and Devendra Raj Kandel are the new faces who have become CWC members of the largest party.

Most of those who were nominated as CWC members during the previous tenure did not join the election fray this time around.

Manmohan Bhattarai and Ram Krishna Tamrakar, who had won under open category in the last general convention, lost election in the same category this time. Mahalaxmi Upadhyaya (Deena) who had earlier been elected under women's reservation quota however failed to get elected as she fought under open category in this convention.

Arjun Joshi, Krishna Chandra Nepali and Ram Kumar Chaudhari, who were earlier directly elected under zonal category, failed to make it to the CWC as they competed under provincial category now.

Amod Prasad Upadhyaya and Kishor Singh Rathor, who were earlier elected under zonal reservation category, didn't participate in the election. Surya Man Gurung, who was elected under indigenous and ethnic community category, and Padma Narayan Chaudhari, who was nominated by the party president in the past, lost in the open category. Aftab Alam failed to get re-elected under Muslim reservation quota. Meena Pandey couldn't make her re-election under women's reservation quota, Meenakshi Jha failed to get re-elect under Madhesi women's category and Kabita Kumari Sardar (Batar) couldn't get elected under Dalit women's reservation quota. Another nominee CWC member Ram Chandra Tiwari was defeated in Madhesi reservation category.
