SARLAHI, Feb 24: Nepali Congress General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula said on Sunday the intent of the ruling UCPN (Maoist) party is not to hold new Constituent Assembly elections.

“If Maoists really wanted elections, why didn’t Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai choose to step down after bringing an ordinance on clearing hurdles for an election government?” questioned the NC leader during a press meet in Lalbandi this morning. [break]

Situala said the ruling coalition parties want to cling on to power at any cost. He also charged Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal with trying to outsmart the president by putting forth the chief justice-led election government proposal, which the NC leader said was actually conceived by the state head.
