KATHMANDU, May 15: The government has been suggested to transform Radio Nepal into the public broadcasting agency or run as a corporation under the communication institution act.

The suggestion was furnished by Radio Nepal Reform Taskforce in a report submitted to the Minister for Information and Communication, Raj Kishor Yadav on Tuesday.[break]

Taskforce Coordinator and former joint secretary Mukunda Prasad Acharya said if Radio Nepal was not transformed into the public broadcasting agency, it should be provided editorial independence considering South Asian and other international practice.

Moreover, the government was suggested to lay off unnecessary staffs in Radio Nepal, provide technical aid, and others.

Receiving the report, Minister Yadav said Radio Nepal was also in need of change as the country was itself in transformation.

Ministry Secretary and Chairman of Radio Nepal Board of Directors, Abaninda Kumar Shrestha said the Ministry was transforming Radio Nepal into public media agency with the help of Japanese International Cooperation Agency.

The government had formed the taskforce last February to study about Radio Nepal and suggest how it could be made more effective as per the changed context.
