KATHMANDU, June 5: The Tribhuvan International Airport was closed down for three hours Friday morning for maintenance of its runway.

The landing strip has reportedly suffered cracks due to the arrival of a large number of heavy aircraft, especially those bringing in relief supplies following the April 25 Gorkha earthquake.

As a result, the airport had to be shut down from 7:00 in the morning with some incoming aircrafts diverted to nearby Indian cities. A Turkish Air plane was diverted to New Delhi while an aircraft of Oman Air landed in Lucknow, according to airport manager of Oman Air Bharat Kumar Shrestha.

The renovation is likely to be completed by 10:00 am, according to the TIA office. RSS
