DOLAKHA, Feb 7: All public schools in Dolakha district remained closed for two days after a majority of teachers thronged the district headquarters Chautara to stage a sit-in to press their 51-point demands.

None of the 408 public schools in Dolakha opened on Sunday and Monday as most teachers went to take part in a sit-in at the District Education Office (DEO) to draw the government´s attention to their demands. [break]

Teachers affiliated to Nepal Teachers´ Union (NTU) and Nepal Educational Republican Forum (NERF) have been on warpath across the country.

Although teachers in the adjacent districts like Sindhupalchok and Ramechhap did not close down schools for staging a sit-in, teachers in Dolakha forced over 78,000 students to staying home for two consecutive days. "It was not our plan to close any school," said Shankarlal Shrestha, Dolakha district president of the NTU.

"But, all the teachers spontaneously flocked to Chautara as the government has overlooked their plights for too long a time."

Meanwhile, Govinda Manandhar, Dolakha secretary of the NTU, said that all teachers have been urged to return to their respective villages and resume their duties from Tuesday.
