Nepal marks Global Entrepreneurship Week

KATHMANDU, Nov 21: Samriddhi Foundation, an institution working to promote entrepreneurship, on Wednesday awarded five inspiring businessmen who through their entrepreneurial skills made significant contributions in the development of sectors they work in.



Those awarded included Kamala Shrestha, beautician and promoter of Siam Beauty Salon; Kiran Joshi, animator and promoter of Incessant Rain Animation Studios; Kishore Raj Pandey, founder of Cafereena Group of Hotels; Shailendra Raj Giri of Merojob.com; and Umesh Shrestha of Little Angles School. They were awarded on the occasion of Global Entrepreneurship Week which is being celebrated in Nepal and across the world from November 11 to 18.



On Wednesday, leading entrepreneurs of the country came together and shared their stories of success and failures, aiming to inspire newcomers and encourage innovation and development of entrepreneurial skills in the country. Darshan Rauniyar, an American-Nepali entrepreneur who also contested for US House of Representatives from Washington as a Democratic candidate; Sisir Bhatta, managing director of BB Airways; and award winners in particular shared their experiences.



"Entrepreneurs are the ones that pave the road and show direction to millions of other to fellow," Rauniyar said.



Rauniyar, who left for US 24 years ago to pursue higher studies, eventually evolved himself as an entrepreneur, learning from hardships of life.



"Start is always difficult," said Rauniyar, adding that he visited people´s doorsteps in Manhattan in the initial days of his business to promote his digital storage products.



Other entrepreneurs echoed Rauniyar. "Success lies in hard work and enthusiasm to make an impact on people´s lives," said Joshi of Incessant Rain Animation Studios. "There is a tremendous potential in Nepal. All we need to do is dare to take some risks and move ahead."



Addressing the function Radesh Pant, chief executive officer of Investment Board of Nepal, said the future of Nepal is on the hand of young Nepalis who have courage to work day in, day out. "True entrepreneurs do no wait for favorable business environment. They create something out of mess," Pant said.



Suraj Vaidya, president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, said problems such as power shortage and labor unrest should be addressed in order to foster entrepreneurship in the country.
