NBA election on Saturday

KATHMANDU, April 1: The Nepal Bar Association (NBA), an umbrella organization of all the legal practitioners, is all set to elect a new leadership. The candidates are holding door-to-door campaigns to turn the table in their favor in the election slated for Saturday.

The election is being held on Saturday to elect the 24th Central Working Committee of the NBA. The NBA was established 59 years ago.


We are very busy today as we are making final preparations, Sher Bahadur KC, candidate for the post of chairman of the association, told Republica Online.

The competition in the election for the central working boy is being held between the two rival groups – Mainali-led group and KC-led group.

Mainali is leading a progressive group while KC is leading a democratic group.

Each group is currently lobbying hard and claiming that their will win the election.

Election agendas:

Mainali group has been raising issues including implementation of the constitution, independence judiciary, corruption control in the judiciary, capacity building of legal practitioners, job security, in its election manifesto.

Likewise, professionalism, independence judiciary, implementation of the constitution, transparency, professional rights and interest are the agendas of the KC-led group.

How many candidates are in the fray for the election?

According to the election committee, as many as 71 candidates have registered their candidacies for the election. Four candidates are in the election fray for the post of chairman alone.

Similarly, for the post of general secretary there are six candidates while four candidates are fighting for the post of treasure. Likewise, as many as 40 candidates have registered their candidacies for the post of 15 members.

The candidates running for general secretary post are Dinmani Pokharel, Birat Neupane, Khamma Bahadur Khati, Narahari Nath Yogi, Gajendra Bahadur Thapa and Chet Bahadur Ale.

While for the post of treasure, Gyan Ratna Shakya, Hari Om Timalsina, Nina Dangol and Hari Bahadur Khadka feature in the list.

The election committee said, as many as 9,522 voters will cast their votes from 33 polling centers. The voting will begin at 8 am close at 4 pm on Saturday.
