Khadka takes two-stroke lead on penultimate day

KATHMANDU, May 16: Rabi Khadka took a two-stroke lead over Deepak Thapa Magar after the third round of the Ghana Shyam Open Golf Tournament despite playing a round of three-over 75 on Wednesday at the par-72 Tribhuvan Army Officers Golf Club on Wednesday.



Overnight leader Khadka was at five-over until the 17th hole but he shot an eagle on the final hole for a total of three-under 213, that gave him a two shot lead over fellow RNGC pro Thapa Magar, who carded one-under 71 for a total of one-under 215.[break]



Overnight joint leader Surya Prasad Sharma faltered to seven-over 79 that forced him share the third position with Umesh Nagarkoti and amateur leader Tashi Tsering at one-over 217. Nagarkoti shot one-under 71, while Tsering played one-over 73 on Wednesday.



Ram Thapa (75) is fifth at 220, whereas Nepal No 1 Shiva Ram Shrestha faltered to sixth after the round of five-over 77 for a total of 221. Jaya Ram Shrestha (73) is seventh at 222 whereas Sanjay Lama and Toran Bikram Shahi shared the eighth position at 223. Rajan Thapa is 10th at 224. Defending champion Ramesh Adhikari is 16th at 15-over 231 after the disastrous round of eight-over 80.



In amateur section, Ashish Pariyar is a distant second at 235 after the round of 80. Tashi Tsering is 18 strokes ahead of Ashish. Tirtha Paudel (83) is third at 236.



Leader Khadka made a mediocre start saving pars on the first six holes. He carded a birdie on the seventh, had a bogey on the eighth and triple bogey on the ninth to take a turn at three-over 39.



On the back nine, he hit a birdie on the 10th and suffered bogeys on the 11th, 15th and 17th holes before closing the day with an eagle on the par-5 final hole to finish the last nine holes at even-par 36.



The final round of the third event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour will be played on Thursday. The winner of the tournament, sponsored by Nepal PGA Advisor Ghana Shyam Thapa, will receive Rs 55,000.
