According to retailers, price of mustard oil has increased by Rs 30 per liter over the past three months. [break]At present, a liter of mustard oil costs as much as Rs 180 per liter. Similarly, price of sunflower oil has also increased by Rs 6 per liter and is selling at Rs 143 per liter. Ghaila, Khukuri and Dhara are the popular edible oil brands in eastern Nepal.
There are about seven oil mills in the Morang-Sunsari industrial corridor.
“Traders are creating artificial shortage to increase price of daily commodities,” a retailer said.
Traders, however, said prices of edible commodities have increased due to low supplies from India. “Low supplies coupled with tight checking at customs points are the major reasons behind price rise,” a wholesaler told Republica.
Basmati rice, which was available at Rs 72.5 per kg last week, now costs Rs 87.5 per kg. Similarly, NLT, Goyal, Ghaila, Hulas, Makhan, and Krishnabhog brand of basmati rice has increased by Rs 15 per kg. Price of mansuli rice has increased by Rs 5 per kg and is selling at Rs 30 per kg, while Jeera Masino rice is selling at higher price of Rs 54 per kg.
Likewise, prices of Kanchi Mansuli rice and Sona Mansuli have increased by Rs 6 per kg each and are currently available at Rs 28 per kg and Rs 30 per kg respectively.
There are more than 70 rice mills in Sunsari-Morang corridor.
Price of wheat flour has increased to Rs 28 per kg. Beaten rice too has become dearer by Rs 5 per kg and is selling at Rs 35 per kg. Price of sugar has also increased to Rs 68 per kg.
Price of vegetables has also increased in the eastern region.
