KATHMANDU, Aug 20: Followers of Buddhism from Kankrebihar have staged a hunger strike at local Ratnapark-based Shantibatika from Tuesday demanding an idol of the Lord Buddha be installed at Kankrebihar in Surkhet.

The fast-unto-death was staged by the Surkhet Kankrebihar Buddha Idol Installment Joint Concerned Committee and it would continue till August 25.

Before this, the police administration had snatched the idol of the Buddha when the Buddha followers tried to install the idol at Kankrebihar at Latikoili VDC on the occasion of the 2557th Budha Jayanti.[break]

Coordinator of the Concerned Committee, Phupu Chhembe Sherpa said that the government should guarantee that the followers of the Buddha would not be mistreated in the days ahead at the areas and places of their devotion across the nation.

Narbu Sherpa, who has been on hunger strike, complained that the government insulted the Buddha followers by not allowing them to install the idol of the Lord Buddha, pioneer of the world peace.

The Committee also demanded that local administration should apologise to the local Buddha followers for thrashing and misbehaviour of the police administration and that the Kankrebihar Conservation Development Trust should be formed immediately.
