All of us have concerns regarding our genitalia that we aren't always comfortable to discuss. Dr Shilu Aryal from the Family Health Division under the Department of Health Services says that this is, however, changing of late. "These days many young women come in for a general checkup of their reproductive health, and that's a good change," she says. For the rest of you with unanswered queries, here we come to your rescue.
How often should I change my underwears?
You should change your panty daily. On days when it quickly gets wet, it's advised to change more often. Wiping the outer area with a soft toilet paper after peeing is a good idea, too.
How often should I change my sanitary pads or tampons?
You can change your pad as often as you like. However, pads are made of synthetic materials, so make sure that you change them within six hours. Changing pads often makes you feel fresher.
If you're using a tampon, make sure you change them every four to six hours. It's advised not to leave a tampon in overnight, especially if you sleep for more than eight hours.
What is Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)? Can pads cause TSS too?
TSS is a very rare but serious illness that can affect males or females at any age, more commonly during the adolescent years. It's caused by a particular type of bacterium called Staphylococcus aureus which causes poisoning in blood. While women using tampons are at higher risk of getting TSS, pads too can cause the illness if it's not changed in the recommended interval of time.
Is itching in labia minora or labia majora normal?
Itching in the vaginal area may be caused by a minor issue, like stress, or could be a sign of vulvar cancer. So if the itch is persistent, consult a gynecologist ASAP.
Are rashes normal?
Dr Aryal says, "Rashes are never normal, but aren't always something you should be scared of. It normally occurs from wetness or bacterial infection. If encountered with a rash, you should get a checkup."
Is it normal if it smells?
Vaginas are supposed to have a particular odor, and it can change over the course of your monthly cycle. However, they aren't supposed to smell 'fishy' either. If you find the odor to be unusually smelly, then you should probably seek help.
Should I use vaginal cleansing soaps to maintain its hygiene?
"Your vagina cleans itself. There's a certain type of bacteria down there that helps maintain its hygiene. The use of chemicals – even soaps that are said to cleanse your vagina – only kills those bacteria," says Dr Aryal, adding, "Just use clean, lukewarm water to wash it now and then. But make sure you don't keep it wet for too long."
When should I visit a doctor for a vaginal checkup?
"If it's way too stinky or itchy or has begun to dispose a little too much of vaginal discharge, then you should visit a doctor right away. However, if you have other issues, however minor it might look like, you can visit a doctor for your peace of mind. An annual checkup would also be wise," she suggests.
Should I believe everything that's on the Internet?
"Well, not all of it. You should also use your conscience to recognize the right information," says Dr Aryal, "Most information on the Internet is generic, and there are only a handful of medical websites that are credible enough."
