The bank said it is preparing to provide funds under the Human-elephant Conflict Minimizing Project and erect electric fencing in the VDC, according to the District Forest Office (DFO) of Jhapa.

In the first phase, the bank had planned to erect 10 km-long electric fence in the areas of the VDC most frequented by wild elephants.

A team of officials of the World bank and the government on Friday visited major elephant-affected areas of the VDC. After the visit, the bank has decided to fence additional eight kilometers, said the DFO.

According to the chief of the DFO, Bishnu Prasad Bhandari, the bank will spend around Rs 8.8 million for fencing the 18 kilometer stretch in the VDC.

He said the fencing work will start next month.

A decade ago, the government had erected fences at several places in Bahundangi to prevent elephants from entering human settlement. But the fence has already broken. Bhandari said the new fences will be stronger than the previous ones.
