SARLAHI, Aug 25: A wild tusker has trampled to death yet another person in Sarlahi district. The police have identified the deceased as Mangangtri Sarki, 60, of Murtiya VDC.

According to Arjun KC, a police inspector at Murtiya Area Police Station, Sarki was attacked by the tusker while he was collecting firewood inside Danfe Community Forest at Murtiya VDC-1. [break]

Sarki, who was living in the house of Purna Bahadur Gurung, had left for the forest early in the Saturday morning. As he went missing for the whole day, the police were able to recover Sarki´s body inside the forest on Sunday morning.

"Footprints of the tusker were found near Sarki´s trampled body. This clearly shows that he was brutally attacked before he died”," said Bhuwaneshowr Sah, spokesperson of the Sarlahi District Police Office.

In the last two months, wild tuskers have killed five locals in Sarlahi, and one in Mahotari district. Besides, the elephants have damaged dozens of houses at various parts of the districts. Two have been seriously injured.

"A team of expert from the Chitwan National Park had arrived here twice but they couldn´t find the tuskers. Getting hold of these wild beasts is not an easy job," said Ramprit Maur, chief at Sarlahi District Forest Office.

Umesh Mahato, a local, expressed disappointment over the government´s failure to contain tusker attacks.

"We have been compelled to live in fear every day. We have keep vigil during the nights to guard houses and properties. The concerned authorities need to act immediately to address the problem," said Mahato.
