Police said that Hariya Mahato, 2, and Upendra Mahato, 30, were trampled to death after the tusker barged in to Jutpani village from the nearby forest and started attacking the locals. Both the victims had died immediately after the attack. [break]
“All the locals were fast asleep when the tusker entered the village,” said Sub-inspector Rabindra Bahadur Dhanuk.
At the time of attack, Hariya were sleeping outside the house because of the unbearable heat. Upendra had dozed off after watering his field in the evening hours.
“Everyone ran for their lives but Hariya couldn´t. He was easily spotted by the elephant and trampled to death,” said Hariya´s father Nathuni Mahato. Hariya´s sister was also injured in the attack and is being treated at a local health post.
Wild tusker attack in Sarlahi has intensified in the past few months. In just one and half months of time period, four locals at various locations have died from tusker attacks. Among the deceased, the police have identified two of them as Danmaya Yonjan of Lalbandi VDC-7 and Purnima Moktan,75, of Dhungre Khola VDC-8.
“The fear of elephant entering our village and attacking us keeps us awake every night and the situation is getting worst by day,” said Umesh Mahato of Dhaurkauli VDC.
Karmaiya, Dhungrekhola, Rajghat, Barahathawa, Dhaurkauli, Haripur, Lalbandi, Atrouli and Pantharkot VDCs are the most affected areas.
Meanwhile, the police informed that they have tracing the killer tusker from early Sunday morning.
“To search these tuskers amid the thick forest is very difficult but we are trying our best,” said Dhanuk.
