TU convocation held, finally<br/>Chancellor Dahal remains absent

KATHMANDU, May 8: The 33rd Convocation Ceremony of Tribhuvan University was held at its central campus in Kirtipur on Friday. The event held after four- year hiatus due to difficult political circumstances in the country saw a total 24,351 students graduating.



While a total 20,212 graduated from the Bachelor Level, 4,109 students graduated from Master Level. There were 30 students graduating Ph.D. degree in various disciplines. [break]



Of them, 1,352 students including two Ph.D. graduates attended the convocation ceremony to receive the graduation certificates, according to TU officials.



On the occasion, TU Co-Vice-Chairperson and Minister for Education Renu Yadav conferred awards to those securing first ranks in nine various faculties during the academic year 2061 BS and 2062 BS.



The chief guest of the function was Professor Dr Hafiz G.A. Siddiqui, vice chancellor of North-South University in Bangladesh.



However, the Chancellor Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who is also prime minister of the care taker government, remained absent from the function. TU officials said this is the first case of chancellor becoming absent in the convocation ceremony. Just days before the ceremony, dahal´s cadres had smeared soot on the vice-chancellor and the rector of the university over examination fee hike.



Those awarded for securing first rank in Master level examinations in 2061 BS include Mohan Prasad Acharya of Pulchowk Engineering Campus and Tejendra Chapagain of Rampur Campus, Rampur and Sujan Koirala of Pulchowk Engineering Campus, Pulchowk for securing the first positions in all Master level examinations held in 2062 BS.



Addressing the function, TU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Madhav Prasad Sharma said the growing financial crunch has put the university in trouble. He asked the government to increase grant amount keeping in view of increasing number of students in the university.



Sharma expressed happiness over the concern demonstrated from various quarters to help end misunderstanding, strikes and vandalism in the university.



Students belonging to Maoist-affiliated All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) had padlocked the office of Examination Controller, Rector and Vice Chancellor and also smeared soot on the face of rector and vice-chancellor over examination fee hike row.
