Three killed in avalanche

SOLUKHUMBU, Oct 16: Three people were killed and 13 others injured after an avalanche hit a hotel situated between Setopokhari and Khomdadin along the route to Mount Barunche on Monday.



According to the Solukhumbu police, the avalanche had hit the hotel in which some foreign mountaineers and their assistants had been staying. [break]



The deceased have been identified as Palden Tamang, 57, of Kerung-2, who had been working as cook as well as hotel assistant Ram Tamang, 18. The owner of the hotel was also killed in the incident but his identity is yet to be ascertained.



Inspector at Solukhumbu District Police Office Bhupendra Giri informed that the avalanche buried the hotel and three Hungarian mountaineers, who were planning ot ascend Mt Barunche. Ten other Nepalis, who were also staying in the hotel, were injured in the incident.



Police learnt about the incident only on Wednesday as the locals could not establish contact due to bad weather conditions. Police further informed that the injured have been taken to Lukla for treatment.
