SPORTS BRIEFS: Chess team off to Assam

KATHMANDU, April 16: A 24-member Nepali chess team left for Guwahati, Assam on Tuesday to compete in the Fifth Jugal Kishor Memorial International Chess Tournament scheduled to begin from Thursday. Nepal Chess Association Vice-president Sujendra Prasad Shrestha is the leader of the Nepali team. Around 400 players from Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will participate in the eight-day tournament. Nepali players competing in the event include national champion Manish Hamal and former national champions Nabin Tandukar, Wilamlal Shrestha and Keshav Shrestha.



Nepal´s first international arbiter Gyanendra Khaiju is also accompanying the team and will act as an arbiter in the tournament. The event carries a total cash prize of Rs 750,000, of which the winner will get Rs 160,000. Nepal Chess Association President Rajesh Hari Joshi bade farewell to the team amidst a function on Tuesday. [break]



Shrestha, Pandey win U-14 chess



KATHMANDU
: Process Shrestha of Rajan Memorial School, Kathmandu on Tuesday claimed the title of Fourth OCCED U-14 Chess Tournament. Though Shrestha and Mahesh Khadka of Everest School, Kailali were level on six points, Shrestha emerged winner on the basis of head-to-head record. Milan Lama of Annapurna Higher Secondary School, Sushant Gautam of Greenland, Jenish Thapa of Annapurna and Sanjay Shrestha of Greenland finished third to sixth respectively with 5.5 points each.



Akriti Pandey, Urja Adhikari and Janaki Singh claimed the top three positions in the girl´s category.
