SPORTS BRIEFS: Boris tennis included in lawn-tennis calendar

KATHMANDU, May 24: The All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association (ANLTA) has included a new event -- First Boris Memorial Lissanevitch Junior Open Tennis Tournament -- in its annual calendar. The event will be held from June 3-9 at the Satdobato Tennis Court.



The event is being organized by Lissanevitch family -- Kabita Regmi Lissanevitch and Alexander Boris Lissanevitch -- parents of tennis ace Aslesha and Ivanhoe. Late Boris Lissanevitch is the father of Alexander and grandfather of Aslesha and Ivanhoe. [break]



Boris is remembered as the first person to start star a hotel in Nepal. The tournament will be organized in five different age categories -- 10 years, 12 years, 14 years, 16 years and 18 years -- in both boys’ and girls’ section. A player will not be allowed to compete in more than two events.



Women’s national champion Aslesha is competing in U-18 category. The expected cost of the tournament is Rs 250,000. The winner of each category will be awarded with attractive prizes.


Int’l handball meeting kicks off


KATHMANDU: The South Central Asian Zone (SCAZ) handball meeting kicked off in Kathmandu on Thursday. Five underdeveloped countries of the region, including Nepal, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Yemen have participated in the meeting. Abu AL Lail of Kuwait, the executive director of Asian Handball Federation (AHF) is also participating in the meeting.
