"Even though the new chopper landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport on June 4 itself, we did not inform media about our latest addition as the helicopter was pressed into relief and rescue works," Anil Manandhar, corporate manager of Shree Airlines, said. The helicopter with call sign 9N-ALK started commercial operation from June 24, according to the company.
"We are working with World Food Program (WFP) to distribute food in various earthquake affected areas," Manandhar said.
The six-seater helicopter is made in France. It cost Rs 260 million, according to the company. With this addition, Shree Airlines now has a fleet of 10 helicopters, including six 24-seater MI-17s.
"This is the fourth among five choppers that we ordered from Airbus in 2013. We will take delivery of the fifth one in 2016," said Manandhar.
According to the company, the helicopter incorporates modern technologies and can fly up to 23,000 feet.
"As the demand for search and rescue and aerial activities has increased, we have added the new helicopter that can fly in high altitudes. If the demand increases, we will add more in the years to come," said Manandhar, adding that they will also cater to mountain tourism and pilgrimage tourism segments.
The helicopter is equipped with air conditioning, sound proofing system, and sand filter that protects engine from dust. It also has a stretcher to carry sick and injured people, according to the company.
