The management that was run with partnership of Poverty Reduction of Informal Workers´ in Solid Waste Management (PRISM) Nepal, under Practical Action and the Centre for Integrated Urban Development with financial and technical cooperation of European Union (EU) provided globes, masks, jackets, glasses, boots and other materials to around 180 persons working in the garbage collection and management sector. EU Ambassador to Nepal Dr. Alexander Spachis distributed the materials in Lalitpur Sub-Metropolis premises, today and said that the materials would be helpful to minimizing the garbage workers´ health hazards.
The project was implemented in the Valley since 2011 with an objective of alleviating poverty of the informal workers in all the five municipalities of Kathmandu valley.
The project has carried out survey of the garbage workers, group formation, regular discussion, saving mobilization, and health and cleanliness, and access to school for the garbage workers´ children, among others.
The materials were distributed to reduce the health risks than earlier for the garbage workers and that it will be distributed to 500 workers in the first round, said Programme Coordinator Nabin Bikash Maharjan.
