KATHMANDU, June 17: The government has decided to send President Dr Ram Baran Yadav to Japan for further medical checkup and treatment after he was diagnosed with a black spot in his large intestine.

An emergency cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar on Sunday decided to bear all the expenses for his treatment in Japan. “The meeting decided to send President Dr Ram Baran Yadav to Japan for further checkup and treatment,” said Minister for Information and Communications Madhav Prasad Poudel after the meeting. Minister Poudel, who is also the government´s spokesperson, said the decision was taken in line with the recommendation made earlier by a medical board. A meeting of the medical board held later Saturday evening had concluded that the president´s checkup at a well-equipped hospital abroad was necessary.

According to president´s press advisor Rajendra Dahal, preparations have been made fly Yadav to Japan Monday afternoon. Yadav will be accompanied a eight-member entourage, including his son Dr Chandra Mohan Yadav, daughter Anita Yadav, advisor Surya Dhungel, personal physician Yadav Bhatta, three security personnel and protocol officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

President Yadav had been manifesting gastroenteritis complications. As a black spot seen in the large intestine could not be diagnosed properly, doctors at TU Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj and Grande International Hospital, Dhapasi had suggested taking him abroad for further check up and treatment.

The medical board meeting had suggested sending Dr Yadav to the nearest hospital abroad. Sources said though discussions are under way whether to send him to USA, the cabinet had decided to send him to Japan as per the recommendation of the medical board.

Sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said the Nepali Embassy in Japan has been asked to make necessary preparations for the treatment, including the selection of hospital and accommodation. However, it is learnt that the Nepali ambassador to Japan Dr Madan Bhattarai has asked for 24-hour time to make the arrangements.
