KATHMANDU, July 15: National Sports Council (NSC) Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama forwarded a proposal to NSC board to dissolve Nepal Amateur Athletics Association (NAAA) on Friday.

Lama forwarded the proposal claiming that the NAAA was responsible for the disappearance of athlete Surya Maya Rai in Japan. Athlete Rai, who participated in the 19th Asian Athletics Championship last week in Kobe, Japan, didn´t return home after the completion of the event. NAAA has been saying that Rai suddenly disappeared at the last moment on the day athletes were supposed to return their homes.[break]

“Rai´s disappearance is not the first incident. We suspect that NAAA officials deliberately left her in Japan,” said Lama during a press conference on Friday.

“Incidents like these degrade national pride and NSC will not tolerate such irresponsible acts.”

Lama claimed that his proposal demanding dissolution of NAAA will not bring up controversy and duel within athletics.

NSC also suspended the chief coach of athletics, Mohan Ghale, who lead the Nepali team in the championship, until the investigation completes.

“NAAA has already given clarification to NSC but we are not satisfied with it,” said Lama.

Meanwhile, Lama informed that NSC has set up a visa-desk and all the players affiliated to different national associations must go through the desk for applying visa to participate in sports program in any foreign country. “The desk will process the documents of the players and forward it to concerned embassies for visa approval. But before that the desk will ask for invitation letter and seek association´s guarantee as well as parents´ guarantee with the athletes,” said Lama.

NSC clears Gunter Lange

In the same press conference, NSC cleared German athletic coach Gunter Lange of the allegation that he was involved in doping scandal involving athlete Rajendra Bhandari. Likewise, coaches Narayan Bahadur Pradhan and Shushil Narsingh Rana have also been cleared of the allegations.

“After going through the report submitted by the taskforce led by then NSC Vice-president Sita Ram Maskey, Ministry of Youth and Sports had already cleared all three from the allegations,” said NSC official Kamal Khanal.

Citing the same report, then NSC board led by Jeewan Ram Shrestha had taken action against the three coaches.

After the NSC action, German Embassy had pulled out its support program to Nepali sports and expressed serious concern over the allegations against Lange.

“We´ll try to bring back the German support project in Nepali sports,” said Lama.
