KATHMANDU, Nov 5: Nine leftist factions, including the CPN (Maoist Centre) and CPN (Unified Socialist), are set to announce their unification at a mass gathering in Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu, on Wednesday. A public rally will be held before the official unification ceremony, scheduled for 1 PM.

The new party will be named the Nepali Communist Party, with a five-pointed star as its election symbol. The unification committee has agreed to hold a national general convention within six months. Pushpa Kamal Dahal will serve as coordinator, while Madhav Kumar Nepal will act as co-coordinator. The guiding ideology of the party will be Marxism-Leninism.

The factions involved in the unification include the Maoist Centre, Unified Socialist, Nepal Samajbadi, CPN (Socialist), Janasamajwadi Party Nepal, Nepal Communist Party, CPN (Maoist Socialist), and CPN Samyabadi. The Deshbhakta Samajbadi Morcha, led by Gopal Kirati, also joined the alliance after eight parties signed the agreement on Sunday.

On Tuesday, the Maoist Centre’s National Convention Organizing Committee formally approved the unification decision.

However, the move has faced internal opposition. Within the Maoist Centre, the faction led by Janardan Sharma has announced a separate political campaign. Similarly, leaders from the Unified Socialist, including Jhalanath Khanal, Ghanashyam Bhusal, and Ramkumari Jhankri, have voiced strong objections to the merger.

Meanwhile, Maoist Centre Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that talks are in the final stages to include former UML leader Bhim Rawal and other leftist leaders in the new unification process.
