KATHMANDU, July 23: Secretary of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Bishal Khanal has refuted the charge of financial irregularities in the institution by Commissioner Dr Leela Pathak.

In an interview to Republica on Thursday, Pathak had said that that institution was marred by financial irregularities. [break]

“The interview has drawn my attention. I do not agree with what she said in the interview,” Khanal said in a press statement.

Khanal further said that he filed an application at the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) seeking investigation into financial affairs of the commission if any.

The secretary said that he would resign from the post if the charge against him is proved. “The interview published without contacting me has hurt my prestige and status besides defaming me,” said Khanal. “I will seek legal remedy from the media (Republica), the interviewer and interviewee through a different process after CIAA completes its investigation.”

In the meantime, Acting Chief Commissioner of CIAA Lalit Bahadur Limbu said that the commission would take a decision next week on the application filed by Khanal.

Khanal has also registered copies of the application at the NHRC and the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.
