KATHMANDU, Aug 17: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Narayankaji Shrestha on Friday said that Nepal is committed to develop "problem-free" relations with its immediate neighbors.

Addressing a workshop organized by the Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) on “Institutionalization of Nepal´s Foreign Policy,” Minister Shrestha expressed confidence that the “problems left by history” can be resolved through dialogues and discussions at political and diplomatic level.[break]

“We have to move ahead maintaining good relationship in order to develop problem-free relationship with neighbors. The problems left by history should be resolved through mutual consultation,” he said.

Shrestha was of the opinion that while the relationship with China is already problem-free, the problem seen in Nepal´s relations with India could be resolved through negotiations at political and diplomatic level.

“Our country as a vibrant bridge between two fast developing big neighbors is more relevant today than the traditional notion that of being sandwiched between two giant neighbors,” he said.

Shrestha argued that Nepal needs to understand the geopolitical significance of its strategic location and exploit it skillfully to seize on better opportunities for overall development of our country.

“It is our sincere desire to further strengthen the multifaceted relations with our neighbors in a pragmatic manner in accordance with the principles of non-interference, mutual respect and mutually beneficial cooperation as well as understanding of each other´s sensitivities and aspirations,” he further said.

The seminar included two separate paper presentations by Former Nepalese Ambassadors Dr Shambhu Ram Simkhada on Enhancing Clarity and Consistency in Understanding the Foreign Policy Goals of Nepal and Dr Dinesh Bhattarai on Strengthening Institutional Capacity for Realizing Foreign Policy Goals.

Addressing the function, IFA Executive Director Dr Rishi Adhikari argued that well thought-out and executed foreign policies can help fulfill the enhanced expectations of the Nepalese people towards attaining better socio-economy in their livelihoods and honorable and dignified life amongst the community of friendly nations.

“For an effective foreign policy, enduring peace and political stability at home is a prerequisite,” he said. “A house in order ensures the accomplishment of foreign policy goals of a country.”
