KATHMANDU, June 22: Minister for Physical Planning and Urban Development Chhabiraj Panta has said that bilateral negotiations between the Government of India and Government of Nepal are underway to form a Nepal-India joint committee to find out the causes of recent floods that hit the western parts of Nepal, including in Darchula.[break]

Speaking at an interaction program organized by Reporters’ Club Nepal in the Capital on Saturday, Minister Panta said the government is currently in negotiation with the Indian government to form the joint committee to find out the causes of floods.

“This requires setting up a high-level joint probe panel comprising top government officials from the both the countries to find out the causes behind the floods in Mahakali River. Currently, we are holding bilateral negotiations with Indian government through diplomatic channel,” Panta said.

Locals of Darchula and leaders of the Far-western Region have alleged that the destructive floods were caused due to the release of water from a hydro-electric dam in Dhauliganga River.
