KATHMANDU, March 28: The Nepali Congress (NC) has called on the government to take legal action against individuals involved in the arson and vandalism that occurred on September 9, alongside those implicated in the September 8 incident.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, the NC stressed that anyone found involved in incidents on either day must be held accountable in accordance with the law.
“Whoever is involved in the incidents of both days must face action, and the NC extends its full support in this regard,” NC Spokesperson Devaraj Chalise said in the statement.
Karki Commission opens door for action against crimes committed...
The party emphasised that the government and the probe commission must not overlook the incidents of September 9, stating that the public has the right to know who was responsible for both the September 8 incident and the subsequent acts of arson and vandalism.
The NC also underscored the need for a transparent, impartial and lawful investigation and prosecution process. It maintained that those responsible should be brought to justice through established legal procedures, rather than through actions driven by emotion or reaction.
Raising concerns over the report prepared by the probe commission led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, the NC said the report, while detailing the September 8 incident, had failed to adequately address the vandalism that took place the following day. It described the report as prima facie flawed and inconsistent with the rule of law.
Citing reports that the commission did not have sufficient time to investigate the September 9 incident, the NC termed the findings one-sided and incomplete.
The party further argued that such an approach has reinforced concerns previously raised by the Supreme Court regarding the impartiality of the commission’s leadership.
