NBA President Rajiv Shrestha said that they have introduced cash prizes to make the event more exciting and reward the players. “We came up with this idea to make the championship exciting and honor the efforts of players,” said Shrestha. “This is the first time we have arranged cash prizes and it is also a kind of experiment. We wish to get feedback on it after the championship.”
According to Shrestha, the event is being organized as per the National Sports Council’s concept of holding national competitions once every six months. Nepal Army Club and Armed Police Force (APF) had won the men’s and women’s titles in the last national boxing tournament held in Jhapa in July.
According to NBA General Secretary Deepak Gurung, the event will feature competitions in 10 weight categories in men’s section and seven weight categories in women’s section. The men’s weight categories are 49 kg, 52 kg, 56 kg, 60 kg, 64 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg, 81 kg, 91 kg and above-91 kg. Similarly, women boxers will compete in 46 kg, 48 kg, 51 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, 60 kg and 64 kg weight categories.
The championship will see participation of eight teams -- one team each from five development regions and departmental teams Nepal Army Club, Nepal Police Club and Armed Police Force Club. Altogether 136 boxers -- 80 men and 56 women -- will compete in the event. NBA will pick the best 10 boxers for the camp of Mission SAG (South Asian Games).
