The cricket governing body is planning to organize these tournaments as part of selections for the upcoming international events--ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers and ICC World Cricket League Championship. The CAN has decided to host U-19 national tournament from September 21 for the ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers expected to be held in November/December.
Similarly, it is planning to hold a senior level national tournament in September (date is yet to be finalized) as the team is scheduled to play two List A matches of the Championship (second round) against Papua New Guinea on October 31 and November 2 in Kathmandu.
"We are planning to organize U-19 and national level tournaments (50-over) in September. The U-19 tournament will most probably begin from September 21, while the date for the senior level event will be decided soon," informed Uttam Karmacharya, acting general secretary of CAN on Wednesday.
The CAN, however, did not organize selection tournaments for ACC U-19 Premier Championship slated for August 26 to September 4 in Malaysia and ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers being held in Ireland and Scotland. Nepal crashed out from the group stage of World T20 Qualifiers after finishing at the bottom of group A standings.
CAN claimed that the players were picked for the closed camp trainings for both events based on their performances in previous tournaments. Ironically, CAN chose players for World T20 Qualifiers on the basis of 50-over tournament for the T20 Qualifiers. The CAN had organized 50-over national tournament before the closed camp training was announced for the Qualifiers.
Similarly, out of 45 players called for the first phase closed camp training of ACC U-19 Championship, 18 players are the members of team that represented Nepal in the ACC U-19 Premier League held in Kuwait in November last year. Similarly, 18 other players are from nine different regions of CAN, while rest are from U-16 national team. The 18-member squad is expected to be announced by Saturday.
The CAN has been claiming that it did not organize selection tournaments for T20 Qualifiers due to internal reasons and ACC U-19 due to monsoon (rainy season).
According to Karmacharya, CAN has already informed all regions to host district and regional selection tournaments for U-19 national event. Meanwhile, different regional associations of the CAN are also planning to organize selection tournaments for the national events.
"We are planning to organize selection tournaments for the national event. However, players could be handpicked if rainfall prevents us from organizing selection matches," said Region no 5 (Nepalgunj's coach) Jamil Ansari.
