National T20 begins today

KATHMANDU, Sept 25: Nepal Army and the newly-formed cricketing region, Region No 9 (Kanchanpur), are all set to debut in domestic cricket in the Pepsi Standard Chartered National T20 Cricket Tournament that begins in Kathmandu on Thursday.



The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) had formed Kanchanpur as a new region bifurcating Region No 6 (Baitadi) during its general assembly held in Pokhara last month, while the Nepal Army has formed its own team recently and sought CAN´s approval for participation in national level tournaments as a departmental team. Region No 3 (Kathmandu), Region No 4 (Bhairahawa), Region No 6 (Baitadi), Region No 9 (Kanchanpur) and Nepal Army have been drawn in Group A of the tournament, while Group B comprises Region No 1 (Biratnagar), Region No 2 (Birgunj), Region No 5 (Nepalgunj), Region No 7 (Janakpur), Region No 8 (Pokhara) and Nepal APF Club.

The top two teams of each group after the round-robin league will qualify for the semifinals, the knockout stage.



Kathmandu will take on Bhairahawa and Biratnagar will start its campaign against Birgunj at the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Thursday. Similarly, Nepal APF Club will face Pokhara and Nepalgunj will compete with Janakpur at the Pulchowk Engineering College Ground on the opening day of the tournament.



According to CAN, the champion will bag Rs 125,000 and the runner-up will get Rs 75,000. The man of the series will receive Rs 15,000 and the best batsman and bowler will get Rs 10,000 each. The tournament is sponsored by Varun Beverages (Nepal) Pvt Ltd and Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Ltd.



The final match of the tournament will be held on October 4.
