As an established model, choreographer, a businesswoman and now an actor in the film “Hasiya,” Hema Shrestha has many roles to play. A popular face in many music videos like Chiyabarima, Banma Fulyo Phool and Maitighar, she has also put her dancing skills to use to choreograph in music videos and films.

With the clothing store, Curves Nepal, she stepped into the role of a proprietor in 2012. A good violinist and a good mimic, she’s not someone to cross lightly as she holds a Second Dan in Black Belt in Taekwondo. However, for the present, Hema is working on being a good actor.[break]

You started modeling in 2006, now you’re shooting for your first film. Why did you wait so long to sign in a film?

Yes, I’m currently busy working in Hasiya that is being directed by Milan Chams. I wanted to establish myself in modeling before jumping into any other sector. Also, I had plans to work in a film only if I liked the character that I was offered. I’m happy with my character in Hasiya and also the film.

Can you give us a brief outline of the film? Also, what is it about your character that has you excited?

The film revolves around a female officer in the Central Investigation Bureau. I’m the central character in the film and I love my character as it’s very bold. My character is required to enact a lot of action scenes for which I’m excited.

Is there any particular kind of film/role you’re looking forward to doing?

My priority in the script is that it utilizes my skills, and so before I sign a film, I do a quick check. I’m open to any kind of film as long as it uses my skills.

What do you do to stay fit?

I make sure that I exercise regularly and I also dance to stay fit. I never skip my meals; I eat heartily but I always work out to maintain the balance.

Of the two, dancing and choreography, which do you prefer and why?

Dancing remains my passion and I prefer it to choreography. I dance to release my emotions. When I choreograph, I want the dancer to depict exactly what I feel, which isn’t quite easily done.

What are some of the best things about your profession?

Modeling and acting means that I get to travel to different locations for shows and shoots. I’m also constantly meeting new and different kinds of people through my work which is really fun.

How did Curves Nepal come to be? Was a retail clothes shop always in the plans?

I always wanted to be a businesswoman and I wanted something of my own. Starting with a brand collection store is a part of the plan to have my own clothing line later. When we started, our focal point was high-end fashion. We were only focusing on ladies who were brand and quality conscious. Now we’re also trying to expand our client base and meet the reasonable yet stylish demands of other ladies.

As a young working woman, what are the challenges you deal with on a daily basis?

Challenges are prevalent in every stage of life, but I’ve found that having to compete with experienced people can be a bit overwhelming.

Is there something you’ve always wanted to do or learn?

I love dancing, and learning ballet has always been high on my to-do list. Apart from that, designing clothes is a skill I wish to learn and I plan to start on that very soon.

How do you pamper yourself?

Shopping is therapeutic for me and treating myself to a shopping spree is how I pamper myself. It’s my only indulgence.
