KATHMANDU, March 6: Mobile banking applications will no longer function if a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is enabled on a device as some banks including Machhapuchchhre Bank have discontinued this service citing security concerns.

Following the directive issued by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Wednesday, banks have been instructed to detect whether customers are using VPNs while conducting mobile and internet banking transactions. In response, Machhapuchchhre Bank has announced the immediate enforcement of this security measure.

"The bank has adopted precautionary steps to protect customer interests. Mobile banking services will not function while using free VPNs," the bank stated in its official notice.

Customers must disable their VPN to access banking services. Despite the convenience of digital banking, banks are prioritizing cybersecurity due to increasing digital threats. Machhapuchchhre Bank has assured customers that safeguarding their privacy and security remains a top priority.

The bank has urged customers to adopt safe digital banking practices and stay vigilant while conducting online transactions.
