Mid-western lifts Nat'l Hockey title

POKHARA, Sept 24: Mid-western Region lifted the title of the First National Hockey Tournament defeating Far-western Region at the Pokhara Stadium on Saturday. Mid-western edged past Far-western Region with a score of 2-1.



With the win, Mid-western bagged a purse of Rs 50,000 while the runner-up Far-western had to settle for Rs 30,000. [break]



Far-western had taken the lead in the game through a goal from Suresh Joshi in the ninth minute. However, it could not hold its lead for long as Mid-western equalized through a goal of Arun Bikash in the 13th minute. Mithilesh Kumar scored the winning goal in the 43rd minute of the match.



Bijayant Sharma, coach of Mid-western Region said that the team had been training for a long time and the win was the result of it. “We couldn´t play as expected because the ground was not perfect.”



The coach of Far-western Region Nar Bahadhur Chand accused the winning team of fielding outside players in their team and appealed for an investigation.



In the third place playoff, Nepal Army registered a 2-0 win over Central Region. Samuel Rai and Ram Shah scored for the winning team. With the win, Army received Rs 15,000.



Arun Bikash from Far-western Region was adjudged the best player of the tournament and received Rs 5,000 in cash prize. Altogether six teams participated in the national tournament held after 13 years.
