A politburo meeting of the UML held on Tuesday concluded that it was not good to appoint someone controversial such as Karki, who was involved in various scams in the past. [break]
“UML will propose at the High Level Political Committee to withdraw the recommendation of Karki for appointment as CIAA chief,” said politburo member Prakash Jwala.
Though the HLPC had recommended Karki, there has been strong criticism within the Nepali Congress and UML against the recommendation. Karki was found guilty by the Rayamajhi Commission of suppressing peaceful democratic protests in April, 2006.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had issued an interim order halting Karki´s appointment process.
Likewise, the meeting has also demanded the scrapping of all political appointments made by the erstwhile Baburam Bhattarai government. “The political appointments made to influence the elections should be scrapped,” said Pradip Gyawali, another politpuro member. “Unless revoked, such appointments may affect the elections.”
The meeting further decided to further strengthen party unity and forge alliances with democratic forces for the upcoming elections.
Concluding that the chances of holding polls by June are now slim, the UML leaders suggested holding them in November instead.
Among other things, UML has also decided to exercise maximum flexibility to bring various agitating parties on board the election process.
While asking the government to hold talks with such parties, the UML has maintained that those parties could be represented in the HLPC to address their concerns.
