KATHMANDU, Dec 7: International Civil Aviation Day is being observed today in many countries with the theme “Safe Skies.” The day is marked mainly by member states of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The observance began on December 7, 1994, during the 50th anniversary of ICAO’s founding, and two years later the United Nations General Assembly granted it formal recognition.
The day highlights the role of international air services in supporting the social and economic growth of countries, and it recalls ICAO’s effort to build a global air transport network that makes travel easier for people everywhere.
ICAO has said the day carries even more meaning as the world moves toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, since air travel remains an important link connecting nations.
