On March 13, the IEC’s 12th Designer Contest is scheduled to select the institute’s best designer from its students, who are currently studying in the different IEC centers across Nepal.[BREAK]
Of all the fashion events hosted by IEC, the Designer Contest is the oldest. And it’s also the much awaited event for the students. The 13-year-old fashion school started the contest after the first year of its establishment.
“The contest is to provide our students with an opportunity to test themselves, and know where they stand as individual designers,” says Sailaja Acharya, the director of IEC.
IEC’s 150 students, who are at present pursuing Bachelor and Diploma programs in fashion designing, will display their individual creations based on a theme.

Altogether, 18 themes were finalized for the contest by a team of IEC teachers. The themes include Space Odyssey, nature, rhythm et al.
“The themes are broader and more professional compared to the previous contests,” Manu Raj, who is part of the theme conceptualizing team adds, “Not only can the students draw inspirations from the themes but also from its elements and characters, and choose the garments accordingly.”
Six students from the IEC’s Birgunj chapter, 18 from Dharan, 12 from Pokhara, 115 from Kathmandu, and six Bachelors students will participate in the contest to be held at Hotel Soaltee Crowne Plaza, tomorrow.
“The students were given 20-30 days to research on their themes,” informs the director of the institution. She adds, “Previously, we encouraged students to design using waste materials such as plastic, papers, and tube lights, and raw materials. However, this year, the apparels must be 70% fabric since there are more fabric options in the market these days. And the designers can use other accessories for the rest 30%.”
The creations will be judged on the basis of the use of color, creativity, and design. The winner will be awarded an LG phone and several goodies along with a scholarship for a Bachelor Course in fashion designing in IEC School, according to Acharya.
