KATHMANDU, Aug 17: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala, who assumed leadership of the High Level Political Committee for a month starting Saturday, has held a meeting with CPN-Maoist Chairman Mohan Baidya in a bid to get the alliance led by him to participate in the fresh polls scheduled for November 19.

Koirala had reached Baidya´s residence at Dhapasi at around 7:30 pm to seek his support for holding the fresh Constituent Assembly (CA) poll on the announced date. Baidya heads the alliance of 33 various parties that are opposed to elections under the existing status quo.

Sources close to Koirala said the two leaders held discussions about the polls and on meeting the demands put forth by the agitating alliance. “Koirala is confident that Baidya will participate in the poll. He is against conceding to the demand of the agitating alliance to defer the poll now scheduled for November 19,” said a source. [break]

During the meeting that lasted nearly an hour, Koirala assured Baidya that he, as coordinator of the HLPC, would try his best to meet his, Baidya´s, political demands in order to open the way for his participation in the poll. Sources said Baidya had taken Koirala´s request positively.

On the occasion, Koirala also inquired about Baidya´s health and wished him speedy recovery. Baidya has been suffering from fever and other health problems lately.
