KATHMANDU, April 23: Gyanu Baba Academy lifted the title of the Second G4 Cup Open National Women´s Volleyball Tournament on Saturday defeating Fishtail Academy 3-1 in the Pokhara derby.
Pariksha Gurung, Aruna Shahi and national player Manju Gurung gave a head start to Gyanu Baba winning the first two sets 25-14, 25-21.[break]
National player Sipora Gurung put up an impressive show with her powerful spikes in the third set to give a 5-1 lead to Fishtail. But it was Saraswati Chaudhary who denied straight set victory to Gyanu Baba as she earned a match point with her fine placing to win the tie-breaker 27-25.
A good coordination between the players of Guanu Baba dented Fishtail´s hope of a comeback in the game with a 25-16 win in the fourth set despite a bold retaliation from Sipora Gurung and Saraswati Chaudhary. Earlier, Nepal Police Club fought back from a set down to register 26-24, 25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 15-10 win over New Diamond Academy in the third place playoff.
The top four teams bagged a purse of Rs 210,000, Rs 105,000, Rs 55,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively.Aruna Shahi was adjudged the best player. The winners in other categories were Fishtail´s Saraswati Chaudhary (best quicker), NPC´s Sushila Thapa (best lifter), Gyanu Baba´s Hom Kumari Pun (best blocker), Manju Gurung (best spiker) and Shanti Ale (best defender).
