POKHARA, Jan 12: Gyanu Baba Higher Secondary School defended the title of Nomsingh Shin Ramyun International Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Saturday defeating Armed Police Force (APF) in the final held in Pokhara, Kaski.

Gyanu Baba registered a comfortable three-set victory over APF, the champion of Dhorpatan Cup held in the capital about a month ago. [break]Gyanu Baba won the match, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19 and bagged a purse of Rs 111,111 along with the trophy. Manju Gurung of the winning side was declared the player of the match as well as the best player of the tournament. Runner-up APF received Rs 50,555.

Gyanu Baba coach Kaushila Khatri credited the victory to collective effort of the players. Khatri opined that her side came up with a better performance compared to Friday. "Everyone gave their best and they had great combination," said Khatri, adding that every member of her side was technically sound. She was also full of praise for her skipper Manju Gurung.

Gurung opined that Gyanu Baba was able to take advantage of APF´s weak defense. "The opponent could not play power game and we came up with an improved performance."

APF coach Kapil Kishor Shrestha attributed the defeat to continuous matches for three days. "The players were exhausted as they had to play for three consecutive days. Thus they failed to play up to expectations," said Shrestha, adding, "We had to play 12 sets on Thursday and Friday."

"Technically the players looked weak. It seemed as if they didn´t know how to play. The result could have been different had we got a day´s rest," said Shrestha.

Nepal Police Club took the third place honors with a four-set win over New Diamond Academy of Kathmandu. Police won the match, 25-18, 20-25, 25-17, 25-15. Lalita Nath of New Diamond was declared the player of the match. The third and fourth teams bagged Rs 20,222 and Rs 10,111 respectively.
