KATHMANDU, April 5: The government has decided to draft a law to convert fuel-powered vehicles into electric vehicles (EVs).

Conversion check

Currently, there is no legal provision for converting fuel vehicles to electric. Earlier, in the first week of Mangsir last year, the then Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Kulman Ghising, proposed that the cabinet allow a temporary three-year waiver for converting fuel vehicles to electric.

Now, the government intends to establish a formal legal framework. Questions such as tax treatment, vehicle registration, issuing license plates, and determining vehicle lifespan remain unresolved. The Department of Transport Management has stated that it is working on standards and guidelines for the conversion process.
